The Electoral Commission announced final results for the 2016 municipal elections. Excluding district council seats, the ANC won 5,080 of 9,301 council seats and held a majority in 161 of the 213 municipalities contested. The outcome showed continuing national reach but increased electoral competition and losses in key urban centres. Electoral choices reflected political judgment as well as local concerns about service delivery, inequality and accountability.
