The ANC’s 53rd National Conference opened at the University of the Free State in Mangaung, during the centenary year. Around 4,500 voting delegates represented branches across the country. The conference was the organisation’s highest decision-making body and brought leadership nominations, policy disputes and accountability into a national forum. Branch delegates’ votes were important, but the conference also displayed the factional competition and unequal access to influence within a mass party.
