President Mbeki released Jacob Zuma from his responsibilities as deputy president of the Republic after Zuma was implicated during the corruption trial of his former financial adviser, Schabir Shaik. Zuma remained deputy president of the ANC at this point. The distinction between government office and party office became a major internal pressure on the movement.
