Tens of thousands marched toward Bisho to demand an end to the military rule of Ciskei leader Oupa Gqozo and the reincorporation of the homeland into South Africa. Soldiers opened fire as marchers attempted to enter the territory, killing 28 marchers and one soldier and injuring more than 200 people. ANC leaders organised the march, while the deaths and injuries were inflicted by Ciskei forces under a separate homeland government.
