Organization history 📅 2 July 1991 📍 South Africa

The ANC’s 48th National Conference opened in Durban, the first held in South Africa since the organisation’s unbanning. Delegates from internal and external regions, MK, the Women’s League, Youth League and ANC departments participated. Nelson Mandela was elected president and Cyril Ramaphosa became secretary general. The conference began the work of rebuilding a mass, legal organisation while it continued to negotiate the end of apartheid.
