The ANC conference opened in Kabwe on the ninth anniversary of the Soweto uprising and continued through 25 June. It reviewed strategy since Morogoro and opened the National Executive Committee to people of all racial backgrounds, electing several new members including Joe Slovo. The conference expanded representation within the ANC’s leadership while confronting internal tensions, armed-struggle strategy and the responsibilities of an exile-based organisation.
