Vaal residents launch an uprising against rent increases and Black local authorities

← Back to Dashboard
Organization history 📅 3 September 1984 📍 South Africa

Residents in Sharpeville and neighbouring townships rejected a rent increase imposed by the Lekoa Town Council and challenged local authorities created under apartheid. The mobilisation drew on township networks, civic groups and political organisations; UDF, COSAS and the Release Mandela Committee had met with residents beforehand. The uprising should be read as popular resistance to imposed local rule and extraction, not as an ANC command operation.
