United Democratic Front launches a broad coalition against the Tricameral Constitution

← Back to Dashboard
Organization history ๐Ÿ“… 20 August 1983 ๐Ÿ“ South Africa

The UDF was launched at Rocklands Community Centre in Mitchells Plain by delegates from hundreds of community, religious, student, womenโ€™s, labour and other organisations. Its immediate focus was opposition to a constitution that gave limited representation to Coloured and Indian minorities while excluding the African majority. The UDF was a broad coalition in its own right, inspired by shared democratic principles; it was not simply another name for the ANC.
