Mahlangu was hanged after conviction in a politically charged murder trial following his 1977 arrest with other returning ANC members. The judge accepted he had not personally fired the fatal shots but convicted him under common purpose. He had joined the ANC after the 1976 uprising and received MK training abroad. His execution became a rallying point for youth resistance and international opposition to apartheid.
