The court sentenced seven defendants to life imprisonment. Rusty Bernstein was acquitted; Denis Goldberg, tried separately, was also sentenced to life. The outcome removed much of the movement's experienced internal leadership from public life and prompted a stronger reliance on exile networks, underground structures and international campaigning. Robben Island became a site of imprisonment and political endurance.
