Sisulu was sentenced for his role in furthering the aims of the banned ANC and in organising opposition to apartheid. The case illustrates how the state targeted political leadership and collective organising through security law. Sisulu briefly obtained bail but later returned to underground work; this sentence is distinct from his later life sentence in the Rivonia Trial.
