ANC calls a three-day stay-at-home against the proposed white republic

← Back to Dashboard
Organization history 📅 29 May 1961 📍 South Africa

The ANC and allied organisers called workers and residents to stay home from 29 to 31 May, opposing the creation of a republic without the participation of the Black majority. The action challenged a political transition presented as national self-determination while African, Coloured and Indian people were excluded from the electorate. Organising drew on workplace and community networks despite police intimidation.
