Government bans the ANC and Pan Africanist Congress

← Back to Dashboard
Organization history 📅 8 April 1960 📍 South Africa

The government announced that the ANC and PAC were prohibited under the Unlawful Organisations Act. This formalised the state's response to mass anti-pass resistance and the crisis following Sharpeville. Both organisations were forced to continue their work underground and outside South Africa. The ban did not erase the movements or the political demands that sustained them; it altered their organisational conditions through surveillance, imprisonment and exile.
