Police kill protesters at Sharpeville during a PAC-led anti-pass action

← Back to Dashboard
Organization history 📅 21 March 1960 📍 South Africa

Residents gathered at the Sharpeville police station during a Pan Africanist Congress campaign against pass laws. Police fired on the crowd, killing 69 people and wounding many more. The campaign was initiated by the PAC, not the ANC. The massacre exposed the lethal force used to enforce pass controls and became a turning point in South African and international opposition to apartheid.
