After political and ideological disputes within the ANC, Africanist organisers formed the Pan Africanist Congress at Orlando Community Hall. Delegates adopted the PAC name and elected Robert Mangaliso Sobukwe as president. The split reflected disagreement over African nationalism, nonracial alliance politics and the Freedom Charter. The PAC's emergence marks a distinct organisation and political current, not a continuation of the ANC under another name.
