Alexandra commuters organise a bus boycott against a fare increase

← Back to Dashboard
Organization history 📅 7 January 1957 📍 South Africa

After a one-penny fare rise, Alexandra residents stopped using buses and walked to work. Township organisations formed the Alexandra People's Transport Action Committee, and the campaign spread to other townships. Women were central organisers and workers sustained the action through long daily walks. ANC members took part, but the boycott grew from local residents' decisions and the economic pressure of rising fares.
