← Back to Dashboard
Organization history 📅 5 December 1956 📍 South Africa

Police raided homes across the country before dawn and arrested 156 people involved in the Congress movement, charging them with high treason. Those arrested included ANC, Indian Congress, Congress of Democrats and FEDSAW activists, among them Albert Luthuli, Walter Sisulu, Oliver Tambo, Nelson Mandela and Lillian Ngoyi. The raids targeted a multiracial alliance and the political programme expressed in the Freedom Charter. The prolonged trial ended with all remaining accused acquitted in 1961.
