Women lead a mass march against pass laws

← Terug naar het dashboard
Organisatiegeschiedenis 📅 9 Augustus 1956 📍 Zuid-Afrika

Around 20,000 women marched to Pretoria's Union Buildings and delivered a petition against pass laws. FEDSAW organised the demonstration with women travelling from across South Africa. The action drew on years of women's organising and challenged both apartheid controls over movement and assumptions that women were politically passive. ANC organisers helped coordinate travel, but the march was a FEDSAW-led action.
