Congress of the People adopts the Freedom Charter

← Back to Dashboard
Organization history 📅 26 June 1955 📍 South Africa

Delegates gathered at Kliptown on 25 and 26 June in a Congress of the People convened by the Congress Alliance. On 26 June they adopted the Freedom Charter, drafted from public demands gathered across the country. The Charter challenged white minority rule by declaring that South Africa belonged to all who lived in it and demanding political, economic and social rights. It was a coalition document, not an ANC-only programme.
