Organization history 📅 18 December 1952 📍 South Africa

At the ANC annual conference in Bloemfontein, delegates elected Chief Albert Luthuli to replace James Moroka as president-general. The conference also empowered the national executive to act to ensure the continuation of the struggle. Luthuli's election followed the Defiance Campaign and a leadership dispute over Moroka's conduct during prosecution. His leadership combined mass resistance, alliance politics and a public commitment to nonviolent struggle.
