Defiance Campaign begins

← Back to Dashboard
Organization history 📅 26 June 1952 📍 South Africa

ANC and South African Indian Congress volunteers began deliberately breaking selected apartheid laws through organised, nonviolent civil disobedience. The campaign also involved the Coloured People's Congress and local organisers across the country. Thousands were arrested over the following months. Volunteers acted against pass controls, curfews and racial segregation, while the government responded with arrests and new restrictions.
