← Back to Dashboard
Organization history 📅 1 May 1950 📍 South Africa

On 1 May, police opened fire on protesters during a stay-at-home action organised by anti-apartheid and workers' groups, killing 18 and wounding about 30. The killings followed attempts to ban meetings and demonstrations against the Suppression of Communism Bill. The ANC Youth League and other organisers disagreed over the proposed action, showing that resistance strategies were contested within the movement.
