Native Representative Council adjourns indefinitely after the mine strike crackdown

← Back to Dashboard
Organization history 📅 14 August 1946 📍 South Africa

Following repression of the mineworkers’ strike, the Native Representative Council decided to adjourn indefinitely. African representatives rejected the body’s inability to influence government policy while police violence and the state’s labour regime went unchecked. The episode exposed the limits of advisory institutions that offered a narrow form of representation without transferring decision-making power to the African majority.
