Young ANC organisers formally established the ANC Youth League at the Bantu Men’s Social Centre. Anton Lembede became its first president, with Walter Sisulu, Oliver Tambo, A.P. Mda, Nelson Mandela and others among its early leaders. The League pressed for African self-determination and a more assertive mass politics, challenging the older Congress leadership’s reliance on petitions and deputations.
