Organization history 📅 28 May 1923 📍 South Africa

At its annual conference on 28–29 May, the South African Native National Congress adopted the name African National Congress (ANC). The change marked an effort to present the organisation as a national political movement. It took place while the state was building new systems of urban control and influx regulation, including the Native (Black) Urban Areas Act, which the Congress opposed as an extension of segregation.
