Following a wave of African workers’ strikes, a delegation of religious and political leaders and workers from the Rand met Prime Minister Louis Botha. SANNC members Saul Msane and Isaiah Bud-M’belle were among the delegates. The meeting illustrates both Congress’s role as a political interlocutor and the limits of a strategy that sought redress from a government responsible for enforcing the racial labour and pass systems.
