Authorities arrest striking Johannesburg sanitary workers

← Back to Dashboard
Organization history 📅 8 June 1918 📍 South Africa

As the municipal sanitary workers’ strike grew, more than 150 African workers were arrested and sentenced to hard labour. The repression showed how quickly workplace protest could be criminalised under a racial labour regime. The SANNC’s later participation in a delegation to the government connected Congress leaders to this wider wave of urban worker unrest, although workers’ own organisations and actions remained distinct.
