Fifty African municipal sanitary workers struck for higher wages, beginning what became known as the “bucket strike.” The action grew to involve thousands of workers, many of whom faced low pay, racialised municipal control and degrading working conditions. The strike was not an ANC-organised campaign, but it shows the worker militancy and material grievances that shaped the political environment in which Congress operated.
