At a Johannesburg meeting attended by about 300 women and 100 men, the Bantu Women’s National League was established with Charlotte Maxeke as president. It organised women politically and sent a delegation to meet the government. The League became an important precursor to later ANC women’s structures. Its formation also highlights a contradiction in the Congress’s early history: women were central to resistance and organising but were not initially admitted as full members of the SANNC.
