SANNC rejects the Beaumont Commission’s land report

← Back to Dashboard
Organization history 📅 2 October 1916 📍 South Africa

At a meeting in Pietermaritzburg, the SANNC described the Beaumont Commission’s report as disappointing and unsatisfactory. The Commission was tasked with demarcating areas for African and European ownership under the framework established by the 1913 Land Act. The Congress’s rejection reflected African criticism that official land policy treated dispossession as an administrative “native question” rather than addressing the seizure of African land and the unequal distribution of territory.
