John Dube sends a petition against the Land Act to the Prime Minister

← Back to Dashboard
Organization history 📅 14 February 1914 📍 South Africa

SANNC president John Dube sent a petition opposing the Natives Land Act to Prime Minister Louis Botha. The petition was one part of a sustained strategy of formal appeal following the Act’s passage. African communities facing eviction, restrictions on land purchase and growing pressure to enter wage labour had little representation in the Union parliament, so the Congress used petitions and delegations to make their claims heard.
