The Natives Land Act received assent on 19 June 1913. It restricted African land purchase and occupation to scheduled areas, initially about 7 percent of the Unionโs territory, despite Africans forming the large majority of the population. The Act intensified an existing process of colonial conquest and dispossession, pushing many families toward overcrowded reserves, tenancy and migrant wage labour. The SANNC executive convened to address the measure and organised political opposition, but its petitioning strategy could not halt implementation.
