The Constitutional Assembly adopts the final Constitution

← Back to Dashboard
Biography ๐Ÿ“… 8 May 1996 ๐Ÿ“ South Africa

After extensive public submissions and negotiations, the Constitutional Assembly adopted the new Constitution. It established a democratic state, entrenched a Bill of Rights, recognized 11 official languages, and committed government to equality and social rights. The Constitutional Court initially declined certification in September 1996 because parts did not meet the agreed principles; a revised text was certified in December. The process showed constitutional democracy as negotiated and contested work.
