The Truth and Reconciliation Commission begins public hearings

← Back to Dashboard
Biography 📅 15 April 1996 📍 South Africa

The TRC held its first formal hearing in East London under Archbishop Desmond Tutu. Created by the Promotion of National Unity and Reconciliation Act, it investigated gross human rights violations and offered conditional amnesty for politically motivated acts fully disclosed. The process brought testimony into public view and gave many victims a platform, while critics argued that individual amnesty and a focus on reconciliation could leave structural violence, reparations and economic accountability insufficiently addressed.
