After the election results confirmed an ANC victory, Mandela addressed supporters and urged them to build a government of national unity. The ANC won a large majority but not the two-thirds threshold required to write the constitution alone. The election ended white minority rule through a negotiated constitutional process, while deep inequalities in land, wealth and opportunity remained.
