Negotiators endorse an interim constitution

← Back to Dashboard
Biography 📅 18 November 1993 📍 South Africa

Delegates at the multi-party negotiating process endorsed an interim constitution that established the framework for elections and a Government of National Unity. Mandela had negotiated directly with de Klerk on final provisions. The settlement made a democratic election possible but was explicitly interim: an elected Constitutional Assembly would later draft a final constitution.
