Members of the Afrikaner Weerstandsbeweging and other white separatists used an armoured vehicle to smash into the World Trade Centre during constitutional negotiations. The attack displayed the organised far right’s rejection of majority rule and its willingness to use violence to obstruct a negotiated transition. Mandela and the ANC continued to press for an election and a political settlement despite the threat of armed disruption.
