South African Communist Party leader and ANC National Executive Committee member Chris Hani was assassinated outside his home. Hani had been a leading figure in the armed struggle and a popular organiser, especially among young people. His killing triggered grief and anger across the country and threatened to derail negotiations. Mandela’s response came from his position as ANC President, in a movement grieving one of its central leaders.
