Delegates elected Mandela President of the ANC, succeeding Oliver Tambo, who became National Chairperson. Walter Sisulu was elected Deputy President and Cyril Ramaphosa Secretary-General. The leadership slate joined figures shaped by exile, prison, trade union organising and internal mass mobilisation. Mandela’s election gave him a mandate from the organisation as it prepared to negotiate and mobilise for majority rule.
