Mandela moves from hospital to Victor Verster Prison

Mandela was moved to Victor Verster Prison near Paarl and held in a house on the prison grounds. The Nelson Mandela Foundation’s prison chronology dates the transfer to 7 December 1988; an abridged chronology and some secondary accounts give 9 December. This entry follows the Foundation’s archival chronology. The move altered the conditions of confinement and enabled the government to hold more direct meetings with him, but he remained a prisoner.
