Govan Mbeki is released from Robben Island

ANC leader and Rivonia Trial co-accused Govan Mbeki was released after more than two decades in prison. Mandela remained incarcerated, but Mbeki’s release reflected the growing pressure on the apartheid government and changed the landscape of the liberation movement. It also reunited an important political organiser with communities and colleagues outside prison.
