The United States Congress overrides Reagan’s veto of anti-apartheid sanctions

← Back to Dashboard
Biography 📅 2 October 1986 📍 United States

The US Congress overrode President Ronald Reagan’s veto and enacted the Comprehensive Anti-Apartheid Act, restricting new investment and other economic ties with South Africa. The law followed years of organising by Black activists, students, churches, trade unions, and anti-apartheid coalitions. It did not itself end apartheid, but increased international pressure while Mandela remained imprisoned.
