Mandela met members of the Commonwealth Eminent Persons Group (EPG), an international mission seeking a path toward negotiations and an end to apartheid. The meeting gave a jailed ANC leader a voice in an international diplomatic effort, but he spoke from a position the government had imposed: imprisoned, banned from public political activity, and separated from his organisation’s leadership. Scholarly accounts date the group meeting to 12 March; other chronologies give 16 March.
