After leaving hospital, Mandela was returned to Pollsmoor and held in a cell alone. The Nelson Mandela Foundation chronology records that he began communicating with the government about eventual talks with the ANC. The isolation separated him from his closest comrades, while also giving the state a controlled setting for contact with a leader it could not silence politically.
