Denis Goldberg, the only white defendant sentenced with Mandela in the Rivonia Trial, was released after accepting the state’s offer. Mandela and other political prisoners had rejected conditional release because it required political concessions. Goldberg’s release is included to show that the offer had different consequences for different prisoners and that individual decisions were made within an unequal system of confinement.
