The United Democratic Front launches and names Mandela as a patron

← Back to Dashboard
Biography ๐Ÿ“… 20 August 1983 ๐Ÿ“ South Africa

Hundreds of civic, church, youth, womenโ€™s, student, and labour organisations launched the United Democratic Front (UDF) at Rocklands in Mitchells Plain. The coalition opposed the tricameral constitution, which excluded the African majority from national political power. Mandela, imprisoned at Pollsmoor, was named one of the UDFโ€™s patrons. The frontโ€™s mass organising made clear that resistance inside prison was part of a much wider popular struggle.
