Mandela wrote to Zenani (“Zeni”) for her birthday from Robben Island. He had spent years unable to share ordinary family milestones in person, and letters were subject to censorship and sometimes failed to reach their recipients. The preserved copy is part of the prison archive and illustrates how he used writing to sustain a relationship with a growing child from whom he was separated by state imprisonment.
