A scholarly study of press access to Robben Island cites a letter Mandela addressed to the commanding officer on 12 September 1964. The record places him in early administrative correspondence with prison authorities shortly after his arrival on the island. Mandela’s surviving prison letters show a lawyer applying his skills to conditions of confinement, even as censorship and the authority of warders limited what prisoners could say and do.
