← Back to Dashboard
Biography 📅 12 June 1964 📍 South Africa

Mandela, Walter Sisulu, Govan Mbeki, Ahmed Kathrada, Denis Goldberg, Raymond Mhlaba, Elias Motsoaledi, and Andrew Mlangeni were sentenced to life. The court sent the seven Black defendants to Robben Island and held Goldberg, the only white defendant, in Pretoria Central Prison. The racial separation of the punishment made apartheid visible in the sentence itself. Mandela received prisoner number 466/64.
