Mandela and seven co-accused are convicted of sabotage

← Back to Dashboard
Biography 📅 11 June 1964 📍 South Africa

The court convicted all the accused except Lionel “Rusty” Bernstein of sabotage. The verdict followed a proceeding in which the accused faced the death penalty and used their defense to challenge the apartheid state’s legitimacy. The conviction was a judicial decision under apartheid law; it must be distinguished from a neutral historical judgment on the justice of the anti-apartheid struggle.
